The Ecos ND 15 (Cobalt Polymer) product range is the new catalyst technology of Umicore Specialty Materials Brugge NV (USMB), to be used as replacement for common Cobalt-Carboxylates.

Although polymers are exempted from REACH, USMB has already covered all issues, and so is prepared for the moment when REACH eventually addresses polymers as well. In this context USMB offers a real long term solution.

All tests done by and in cooperation with the Fraunhofer Institut have shown, that the Cobalt Polymer in Ecos ND15 is none hazardous for human health and the environment, it is not toxic, not aqua toxic and not sensitizing. The Cobalt Polymer complex in Ecos ND15 does not require any labelling and therefore it is a real solution for the future.
Our Ecos product range comprises single-metal dryers, multi-metal dryers and a selection of products for the printing ink industry. Products are available for use in both solvent-based and water-based systems. An overview and further details of our Ecos product range are available on request.

Binders mainly based on renewable raw materials, which will be produced in the Umicore Specialty Materials Brugge NV (USMB) factory, having the following main applications:

Alkyd emulsions are used in water-based, oxidative drying coatings, they correspond to the strict VOC regulations and don’t need co-solvents to dry.
Alkyd emulsions fit perfectly in the over-all picture of ecological and bio sourced paints.

Umicore Specialty Materials Brugge NV (USMB) has a long history and tradition as a toll ester producer. Since 2012 USMB wishes to profile as a strong independent brand on the market, offering a full range of Valiflex and Valilube esters at our customer’s disposal.

Pine trees from sustainable managed forests form the basis of much of today's pulp and paper production. During the Kraft paper production one of the pine chemicals is extracted as Crude Tall Oil (derived from the Swedish word "Tallolja“or "PineOil“). Tall Oil Fatty Acid, TOFA, is made out of this Crude Tall Oil. The Valilube and Valiflex ester products are TOFA or dimer based.

USMB strives to implement sustainable and renewable raw materials into its product range, putting great importance to the global environmental impact. TOFA based products fit perfectly in this vision. TOFA based products offer a long-lasting alternative to petrochemical raw materials. TOFA even overperforms alternative vegetable (edible) oil based products on CO2 consumption (cradle to gate).
